al-Sufi 'Book of the Images of the Fixed Stars' Mug
Free shipping on orders over $65
Description
The Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi wrote his Book of the Images of the Fixed Stars in 964, revising Ptolemy's star catalog with his own observations and the Arabic names for the stars. Many familiar star names, such as Aldebaran and Betelgeuse, come down to us through this Arabic tradition. He also recorded the Andromeda Galaxy as a little cloud, one of the earliest known mentions of it. This page is from a late 15th-century copy.
