Description
The Musicians is an early painting by Caravaggio (1571–1610), dated 1597 and commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, the artist's first great patron in Rome, who gave him quarters in his palace. Music-making was a favorite subject in del Monte's circle, and Caravaggio painted his models from life, including, it is thought, himself. The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum's collection in 1952.
