Description
Chalchiuhtlicue, She of the Jade Skirt, was the Aztec goddess of rivers, lakes and the sea, and a protector of childbirth and newborns. This basalt figure was carved by Mexica (Aztec) sculptors sometime between 1325 and the Spanish conquest in 1521, and it still shows traces of the pigment that once covered it. In the Aztec story of the ages of the world, she ruled the fourth sun, which ended in a great flood.
