Description
Diego Velázquez painted Las Meninas in 1656 as court painter to King Philip IV of Spain. It shows the five-year-old Infanta Margarita surrounded by her attendants in a room of the Alcázar palace in Madrid, with the artist himself standing at a large canvas and the king and queen reflected in a mirror at the back. The painting has hung in the Prado in Madrid for generations and has fascinated artists from Goya to Picasso.
