Description
Emanuel Leutze painted Washington Crossing the Delaware in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 1851, imagining the Continental Army's crossing on the night of December 25 to 26, 1776. The Metropolitan Museum's version is the second he painted; the first was destroyed in a bombing raid on Bremen in 1942. It remains one of the most reproduced images in American history.
