Description
Giovanni Battista Piranesi, a Venetian-born printmaker working in Rome, first published his Imaginary Prisons (Carceri d'invenzione) around 1749-50. He reworked the plates for a second edition in 1761, darkening the shadows and adding more chains and machinery. The prisons never existed, and later writers and artists have treated them as a picture of nightmare itself.
