Description
Herman Henstenburgh was a Dutch artist from Hoorn who specialized in delicate watercolor and gouache still lifes on parchment. Vanitas pictures grew out of the Dutch Golden Age and take their name from the Biblical line vanity of vanities: a skull, a bone and a snuffed candle are reminders that life and beauty are brief. It is a memento mori meant to be contemplated, not feared.
