Description
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) made this woodblock print around 1830–32 for his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which helped make Fuji the most celebrated subject in Japanese landscape art. It shows pilgrims making the devotional climb up the sacred mountain, a journey popular among ordinary people in Edo-period Japan.
