Hokusai 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' Poster
Free shipping on orders over $65
Description
Hokusai made The Great Wave around 1830-32, in his early seventies, as part of his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The print leans on Prussian blue, a pigment newly imported from Europe, which gave the wave its famous deep color. The giant wave is not a tsunami but a rough-sea swell, and the boats below are fishing vessels carrying their catch to market. It became one of the most reproduced images in the world and helped spark Japonisme in European art.
