Description
Jacques de Gheyn II was a leading Dutch draftsman and printmaker around 1600, also known for an illustrated drill manual for the army of Maurice of Nassau. He drew a small group of witch scenes at a time when fear of witchcraft was still driving trials across Europe. The Met dates this drawing to the late 16th or early 17th century, in the Mannerist style that favored crowded, strange compositions.
