Description
Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was a leading French academic painter who was also a sculptor, and he returned to the legend of Pygmalion in both media. In the myth, a sculptor falls in love with his own statue and the goddess Venus brings it to life. This painting dates to around 1890, and the Metropolitan Museum received it as a gift in 1927.
