Description
John William Waterhouse painted A Mermaid in 1900 and presented it to the Royal Academy of Arts as his diploma work, which is why it is in the Royal Academy's collection in London. It was inspired by Tennyson's 1830 poem The Mermaid, and Waterhouse made an oil sketch for it in 1892.
