Description
John William Waterhouse painted The Favourites of the Emperor Honorius in 1883, and it is in the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide. It was the first Waterhouse painting bought by a public institution anywhere. The subject plays on an old story, told by the historian Procopius, in which the Roman emperor Honorius mistook news that Rome had perished for news of his pet chicken named Roma.
