Description
John William Waterhouse painted Thisbe in 1909 and showed it at the Royal Academy that year. It takes the story of Pyramus and Thisbe from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book IV: two lovers in Babylon, whose families forbid them to marry, talk through a crack in the wall between their houses. The painting is also known as The Listener.
