Occultum Lapidem Mug

Description
Occultum lapidem is Latin for hidden stone, a phrase alchemists used for the philosopher's stone, the legendary substance said to perfect metals and the soul. The phoenix rising from fire is an old alchemical emblem of that transformation. Painted by J. Augustus Knapp for Manly P. Hall's The Secret Teachings of All Ages (1928), a book that gathers the symbolism of ancient mystery traditions, Freemasonry, alchemy and Hermetic philosophy. Printed twice around the mug.
