Description
Ogata Kōrin painted Irises at Yatsuhashi (Eight Bridges) on a pair of six-panel folding screens, in ink and color over gold leaf, sometime after 1709. The scene comes from the Tales of Ise, a classic of Japanese literature, in which a courtier stops at a bridge-crossed marsh and writes a poem whose lines spell out the word for iris. Kōrin leaves out the people and the water and lets the flowers and the zigzag of the plank bridge carry the whole story.
