Description
Pierre-Auguste Cot (1837–1883) exhibited The Storm at the Salon of 1880, where critics debated its literary source, suggesting both the French novel Paul and Virginie and the ancient Greek romance Daphnis and Chloe. Like his earlier Springtime, it was enormously popular and widely reproduced. It came to the Metropolitan Museum with the bequest of Catharine Lorillard Wolfe in 1887.
