Pieter van der Heyden 'Avarice' Mug
Free shipping on orders over $65
Description
Pieter van der Heyden engraved Avarice in Antwerp in 1558 from a drawing by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, part of a series on the Seven Deadly Sins published by Hieronymus Cock. Bruegel's crowds of misers and monsters owe a clear debt to Hieronymus Bosch, whose nightmarish moral scenes were enormously popular in the Netherlands. The Latin line beneath asks what fear or shame a hurrying miser ever feels.
