Roundel with the Temptation of Saint Anthony Mug
Free shipping on orders over $65
Description
Saint Anthony was a third-century Egyptian hermit whose years alone in the desert were said to be plagued by demons, a story that has tempted artists from Bosch to Flaubert. This small painted-glass roundel is dated 1532, made in the years when such panels were set into the windows of private homes in northern Europe. The monsters crowding the saint were a chance for the glass painter to show off invention and humor.
