Caspar David Friedrich, the leading painter of German Romanticism, returned to the subject of two figures looking at the moon several times in the 1820s. The Metropolitan Museum's version dates to about 1825–30. His landscapes treated nature as a place for reflection and longing, and this quiet twilight scene became one of the most recognizable images of the Romantic movement.
