Description
Vajrabhairava is a fierce form of Manjushri, the Buddhist bodhisattva of wisdom, and is known as the conqueror of death. This mandala was woven in silk tapestry (kesi) in China around 1330-32, when the Mongol rulers of the Yuan dynasty were patrons of Tibetan Buddhism. Weaving a mandala instead of painting it was a costly choice, reserved for important imperial commissions.
