Description
Titian painted several versions of Venus and Adonis in the 1550s, first for Prince Philip of Spain, later King Philip II. It shows the goddess of love clinging to the hunter Adonis as he sets out with his dogs, trying to hold him back from the hunt that will kill him. The subject comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. This version is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Printed twice around the mug.
