Description
Vincent van Gogh painted La Berceuse in early 1889 in Arles, a portrait of Augustine Roulin, wife of the postal worker Joseph Roulin, who had befriended him. She holds the cord used to rock a cradle, which is outside the frame. Van Gogh made several versions of the portrait, and he imagined it hung between two sunflower paintings. This version is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
