Description
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 while staying at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he had admitted himself the previous month. The view is based on the sky outside his east-facing window, but the village and the swirling composition were worked up from memory and imagination. It has been in the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941.
