Description
Albrecht Dürer published Saint Michael Fighting the Dragon in Nuremberg in 1498 as one of fifteen woodcuts in his Apocalypse series, illustrating the Book of Revelation. The subject is the war in heaven from Revelation 12, where the archangel Michael and his angels cast the dragon out. The series made Dürer famous across Europe and showed that a woodcut could rival an engraving in detail and drama.
