Description
Allaert Claesz. was a Dutch engraver active in the first half of the 1500s. His small engravings of the Dance of Death belong to the danse macabre tradition, in which Death leads people of every rank to the grave. The idea grew out of the plague years of the late Middle Ages and was made famous by Holbein's woodcuts of 1538.
