Description
Bhawani Das painted the Great Indian Fruit Bat in Calcutta around 1777-82 for Lady Mary Impey, wife of the chief justice of Bengal, who hired Indian artists to record the animals of her private menagerie. The work belongs to Company painting, a style that blended Indian and European natural-history illustration. Fruit bats, also called flying foxes, are among the largest bats in the world and feed on fruit and nectar.
