Coffin of Khnumnakht Mug

Description
This painted wooden coffin was made in Middle Kingdom Egypt around 1850-1750 BCE for a man named Khnumnakht. Coffins of this period were covered in hieroglyphic spells meant to protect the dead on their journey, and the pair of eyes on the side let the deceased look out at the world of the living. The panels of bold color and sharp lines are the work of painters who followed strict conventions that changed little for centuries.
