Description
Edvard Munch made several versions of The Scream between 1893 and 1910; this is the 1893 version in tempera and crayon on cardboard, now in the National Museum in Oslo. Munch said it grew from an evening walk at sunset, when the sky turned blood red and he felt an infinite scream pass through nature. It is a defining image of Expressionism and of modern anxiety.
