Description
Georges de La Tour, a French painter of the 17th century, specialized in night scenes lit by a single candle. He painted several versions of the Penitent Magdalen, in which Mary Magdalene meditates on mortality beside a skull and a flame. Largely forgotten after his death, he was rediscovered in the early 20th century and is now counted among the great masters of candlelight painting.
