Description
Jacques de Gheyn II was a leading Dutch draftsman and printmaker around 1600, also known for an illustrated drill manual for the army of Maurice of Nassau. He drew a small group of witch scenes at a time when fear of witchcraft was still driving trials across Europe. This pen-and-ink drawing is dated to the late 16th or early 17th century, in the Mannerist style that favored crowded, strange compositions.
