Description
Johannes Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring around 1665. It is a tronie, a Dutch study of a character or expression rather than a portrait of a sitter, and the model has never been identified. The painting sold at auction in 1881 for only a few guilders and was bequeathed to the Mauritshuis in The Hague in 1903, where it has become one of the most visited works in the Netherlands.
