Description
This neck-amphora was made in Athens in the second quarter of the 7th century BCE, long before the classic black-figure and red-figure styles took shape. It is attributed to an anonymous painter known today as the New York Nessos Painter. Big storage jars like this carried wine, oil and grain, and their painted bands of animals, monsters and heroes are among the earliest Greek storytelling in pictures.
