The Unicorn Defends Himself is one of the seven Unicorn Tapestries, woven in the Southern Netherlands around 1495-1505 in wool, silk and metallic threads. The series follows a hunt for the unicorn, and no one is certain whom it was made for or exactly what it means. Some read it as a story of courtly love and marriage, others as an allegory of Christ's Passion. It hangs today at The Cloisters in New York, part of the Metropolitan Museum.
